Do I Need a Sulfate-Free Shampoo?

Brunette Hair and Golden Highlights

The past couple of years have presented a big push towards sulfate-free shampoos, but the truth is some people's hair can benefit from extra cleansing power sulfates can bring. What are sulfates? Sulfates are primary surfactants - meaning they attract both oil and water. This unique property allows the oil and dirt to be removed from your hair and then rinsed away by the water. This makes them great at removing oil and dirt, but it can also strip your hair of it's natural oils, which gives sulfates their bad reputation. What kind of shampoo is for me? If your hair is colored or chemically-treated, or you've gotten a Brazillian Blowout in Bee Cave, you will definitely want to choose a shampoo without sulfates. This is also the best option if your hair is dry, curly, prone to split-ends or you've gotten a perm in Austin. You might want a shampoo with sulfates if your hair is on the oily side. It's also a good option if you can get away with washing your hair a few times a week, the sulfates will give your hair a deeper clean. How to read your shampoo’s ingredients When a product says 'sulfate-free’ it usually means it is free of one of these sulfate variations: Sodium Laureth Sulfate Sodium Lauryl Sulfate Ammonium Laureth Sulfate Knowing the names of these sulfates will allow you to determine if your favorite shampoo is sulfate-free.
